Dry Ridge Roofing

Mechanically Fixed Ridge & Hip Systems

On many roofs the ridge and hip tiles sit on a bed of mortar that shrinks, cracks and washes out over the years, until a strong wind lifts them off. A dry ridge system replaces that mortar with mechanical fixings, so there is nothing to crack, nothing to repoint and the tiles stay secure in high winds.

Each ridge or hip tile is screwed or clipped to a timber batten along the top of the roof, with a ventilated roll beneath it. As well as holding the tiles firm, many systems let air move out of the roof space, which helps reduce condensation in the loft.

Steadfast fits dry ridge on homes and commercial buildings across Maidstone, Kent and South East London. A free drone roof inspection helps assess the condition of your roof and identify potential issues, and a free, no-obligation quote sets out the work. Sound ridge tiles can often be refitted, keeping the roof’s appearance.

When to Call Us

Signs You Need Dry Ridge Roofing

  • Cracked Ridge Mortar

Gaps and crumbling bedding along the ridge are the first sign that the tiles are losing their grip.

  • Loose Ridge Tiles

Ridge tiles that rock or move in the wind are at risk of falling, which is dangerous for anyone below.

  • Ridge Tiles Blown Off

After a storm, missing ridge tiles leave the top of the roof open and need replacing quickly.

  • Repeated Repointing

If the ridge has been repointed before and has cracked again, a dry ridge system ends that repair cycle.

Pricing

Dry Ridge Costs

Every job is different, so we price from the inspection rather than guess over the phone. These are the things that move the figure.

FREE, No-Obligation Quotes. Your quote costs nothing and commits you to nothing, so you can make an informed decision about your property.

  1. Length of Ridge & Hips

A hipped roof has more ridge line to fix than a simple gable roof of the same size.

  2. Condition of Existing Tiles

Sound ridge tiles can be refitted, while broken ones need replacing with a matching tile.

  3. Access Needs

Roof height and layout decide whether scaffolding is needed to work safely along the ridge.

  4. Type of Roof Covering

Dry ridge systems are made for different tile and slate profiles, and some cost more than others.

How It Works

Our Dry Ridge Process

  1. Checking the Ridge

We assess the condition of the ridge and hips, along with the tiles on either side of them.

  2. Lifting the Old Ridge

Ridge and hip tiles are taken off, the old mortar is cleared away and sound tiles are set aside for reuse.

  3. Fitting the System

A timber batten is fixed along the ridge, then the ventilated roll is laid over it and sealed to the tiles on each side.

  4. Fixing the Tiles

Each ridge or hip tile is mechanically fixed to the batten, with joints and end caps sealed to keep the weather out.

FAQs

Dry Ridge FAQs

What Is the Difference Between Dry Ridge & a Mortar Bedded Ridge?

A mortar bedded ridge relies on sand and cement to hold the tiles in place, which cracks and weathers over time. A dry ridge system fixes each tile mechanically to a batten, so the tiles stay secure without depending on mortar.

Can My Existing Ridge Tiles Be Reused on a Dry Ridge System?

Usually, yes. Ridge tiles that are undamaged can be cleaned and refitted on the new system, which keeps the appearance of your roof the same. Any broken tiles are replaced with a matching profile.

Does a Dry Ridge Help Ventilate the Loft?

Many dry ridge systems include a ventilated roll, which lets air move out of the top of the roof space. That airflow helps reduce condensation in the loft.

Can Dry Fix Systems Be Fitted to the Hips as Well?

Yes. Dry hip systems work in the same way along the sloping hips of the roof, so the whole ridge line can be mechanically fixed.

Is Dry Ridge Suitable for Older or Listed Roofs?

Dry ridge systems suit most tiled and slate roofs. On some older or listed properties a traditional mortar ridge may be preferred for appearance, and we explain the options when we quote.
